A bodged upgrade at the Nationwide Building Society led to an error that resulted in thousands of customers not being debited for cash machine withdrawals.
Link, the operator of the UK’s national cash machine network upgraded the ATM network at the end of 2007, but the society did not handle the upgrade correctly.
As a result 7,500 customers who withdrew money from their accounts using cash machines at Northern Bank between last November and this February were not debited. Nationwide said, "This was an error on our part and was not caused by Northern Bank."
The building society has been forced to apologise to affected customers who have been told that the outstanding money will be debited from their accounts on 10 March. "We will ensure that no customers are disadvantaged as a result of this error," it added.
