Catalogue selling giant Argos has installed a card payment system from VeriFone Holdings in more than 600 stores.
Argos, part of the Home Retail group, rolled out the PAYware Merchant system as part of its adoption of Chip and PIN technology.
The system allows Argos to process 50 transactions per second, enables secure payment authorisation and offers detailed reporting, transaction search facilities and a comprehensive audit trail.
It has been designed to offer high availability and resilience and supports compliance with the PCI Data Security Standard.
Jacqui Glenn, head of Argos IT, said: “We saw the move to Chip and PIN as an opportunity to review our existing electronic funds transfer system. As a business-critical system, we were looking for a card payment solution that offered security, speed and reliability.”
The PAYware system was chosen because of its proven success with other retailers, she added.
Earlier this year, Argos implemented a new warehouse management system from Manhattan Associates at the second of three major distribution centres. The warehouse management overhaul is set to be completed in May.
