help down the road. Symantec should also look at adding predictive capabilities to its solution, to provide
early warning to end-users, helping them avoid surprises and catastrophes.
Regardless of futures, Symantec s backup customers have a comprehensive, easy-to-use solution to gain
more visibility into their backup environments. Extending the operational-level reporting already available in
NetBackup, backup administrators and IT and business management will be better equipped with business-
level information in Veritas Backup Reporter. Armed with more information, IT and its constituents will be
empowered to make better decisions and achieve more effective planning for data protection. IT
organizations win big with the use of backup reporting, garnering higher customer satisfaction, operational
efficiencies, CapEx and OpEx savings and more effective budgeting as well as reduced risk and financial
penalties.
For previously stated reasons, Symantec will be a force in this space. It s likely that the smaller,
heterogeneous backup reporting players could be trampled by this 800-pound gorilla. On the other hand,
Symantec s marketing efforts could give potential customers a much-needed jolt, educating them about the
benefits of business-level backup reporting. Considering that large IT shops might deem a backup reporting
purchase as a capital expense, requiring a thorough review of vendors in this space, Veritas s entr e into this
market might create new opportunities for its pioneering competitors. Finally, Symantec will have to overcome
human nature as some customers will think this is like having the fox guard the hen house. If the product is
equally good at exposing some of their own faults as it is others, then that objection should go away.
