Company: LANDesk Software

There are a number of assumptions that are to be considered when using this guide:

• The main purpose of this guide is to upgrade LANDesk Management Suite 8 and v8.1 to LANDesk Management Suite 8.5.

• All servers and databases must be backed up and or imaged prior to upgrading any LANDesk software in order to restore the LANDesk Core Server back to the pre-upgraded state; there is no option to uninstall 8.5 to the previous version.

• There are a number of add-on tools and enhancements that can be used in conjunction with LANDesk, some released by LANDesk and some by third party vendors. This paper does not take these tools into consideration.

• This paper assumes a working knowledge of the LANDesk product.

• An upgrade is a complex issue, this guide is meant as a just that, a guide. Every installation of LANDesk is a unique one. There is no substitute for knowledge of an enterprise and knowledge of the LANDesk products. Please consult your LANDesk Expert Solution Provider for assistance in the upgrade process.

Upgrading from version 7 is covered in a separate paper.  Please read this document carefully in its entirety before beginning any installation of LDMS 8.5.   The LANDesk client s should be updated as soon as possible to take advantage of enhancements introduced in LDMS 8.5. Assumptions There are a number of assumptions that are to be considered when using this guide: "   The main purpose of this guide is to upgrade LANDesk Management Suite 8 and v8.1 to LANDesk Management Suite 8.5. "   All servers and databases must be backed up and or imaged prior to upgrading any LANDesk software in order to restore the LANDesk Core Server back to the pre-upgraded state; there is no option to uninstall 8.5 to the previous version. "   There are a number of add-on tools and enhancements that can be used in conjunction with LANDesk, some released by LANDesk and some by third party vendors. This paper does not take these tools into consideration. "   This paper assumes a working knowledge of the LANDesk product. "   An upgrade is a complex issue, this guide is meant as a just that, a guide. Every installation of LANDesk is a unique one. There is no substitute for knowledge of an enterprise and knowledge of the LANDesk products. Please consult your LANDesk Expert Solution Provider for assistance in the upgrade process.  Upgrade Methods There are a number of ways to upgrade a LANDesk domain. Upgrade from LANDesk Management Suite 7 and earlier there were two Methods available:   "   In-Place Upgrade: An in-place migration is an upgrade of an existing Core Server to LDMS 8.5. (LANDesk does not recommend upgrading the operating system of an existing Core Server.) If you want to preserve any Management Suite 8.01 or 8.1 data, you must install to the existing 8.01 or 8.1 Core Server and use the existing database. In Management Suite 8.x, most data and preferences are stored in the database. Since an upgrade uses the existing database, that data is preserved. "   Side by Side Upgrade: Is the process of installing a LANDesk Core Server on a new server using the same database as the previous version.   4 Untitled DocumentLeaving the previous version of LANDesk untouched.   The In-Place Upgrade is the only method that is supported by LANDesk Software. The previous Database has to go through an upgrade process in order to be able to work with an LDMS 8.5 Core Server.  Upgrading from Management Suite 8.01 and 8.1 If you want to preserve any Management Suite 8.01 or 8.1 data, you must install to the existing 8.01 or 8.1 Core Server and use the existing database, an in-place upgrade will not ask for the location of the database or if a new database should be used. It will use the database that the current Core Server is setup to use. In Management Suite 8.x, most data and preferences are stored in the database. Since an upgrade uses the existing database, that data is preserved. In-Place Migration "   With any upgrade a full backup and/or image of the Core Server and Database should be done prior to starting the upgrade process. Once the server is upgraded there is not a Roll back to previous version available. "   The Upgrade process will upgrade all installed components on the current Core Server that were installed with the previous versions of LANDesk Management Suite. "   This guide will not go into any details of new features added to LANDesk Management Suite 8, v8.5 "   Before the Upgrade contact your Expert Solution Provider to make sure that your Username and Password have licenses added for the LDMS 8.5 version. Upgrade steps 1. Backup the Management Suite Database. 2. Backup the Core Server so that it may be restored to a working state if needed an image of the Core Server as a method of backing it up. 3. Uninstall Management Suite Service Centers. Service Centers are no longer supported in LDMS 8.5. There is a replacement for this but not covered in this guide. 4. If LANDesk Handheld Manager is installed, uninstall it 5. If LANDesk Server Manager is installed, uninstall it 6. Check the NTFS rights that the user that is performing the upgrade has to the inetpub\wwwroot\remote directory. The user needs to have full Control   5 Untitled Document7. Set All of the LANDesk and Intel* LANDesk services to Manual 8. In Add/Remove Programs uninstall CrystalSetup_ENU (The language suffix will match the installed language). . 9. If the LANDesk Client is installed on the Core Server uninstall it. Reboot after uninstalling, even if not prompted 10. Stop the World Wide Publishing Service. 11. Un-register the following dll files with the regsrv32.exe /u command: schcom.dll, svrinet.dll, and errstr.dll    regsvr32.exe /u .dll  12. Turn on MSI logging through a GPO:    Run the group policy editor: Start / Run... / gpedit.msc    In the tree view on the left, expand "   Local Computer Policy / Computer Configuration / "   Administrative Templates / Windows Components / Windows Installer    Double click on Logging.    Enable logging    In the Logging text box, enter the string "voicewarmup" which will log everything.    Click OK to save your changes and close gpedit.msc  NOTE: This will create a log file in the temp location of the install.  Should there be any errors during an install this log file will help in troubleshooting the upgrade. The logging should be turned off after the upgrade process is complete. 13. From a run line type %temp%. Delete all un-needed log files that already exist. The MSI logging will create an install log file in this location. Naming scheme of MSI*****.log ***** being random characters. 14. Place CD in the CD-Rom Drive and allow AUTORUN.EXE to execute or select the AUTORUN.EXE from the extracted files. 15. Select the LANDesk component to install   6 Untitled Document Note: The first three options are a full install of LANDesk Management Suite 8.5 and are restricted by licensing.  16. Select the Check prerequisites and install of the component to be installed. If a component fails there is a list of what passed and failed. Once all prerequisites have been installed select the Install now to continue.     17. The upgrade process will determine the previously installed LANDesk Products; setup installs the same configuration as your older version. After setup finishes, you can rerun the 8.5 setup to add or remove components.   7 Untitled Document   8 Untitled Document18. The End User License Agreement (EULA) is displayed and will need to be agreed to in order for the upgrade to proceed.   19. A new feature added in LDMS 8.5 is publishing reports in the web console. A user will be created and a password will need to be specified during the upgrade.    9 Untitled Document 20. After the creation of the password for reports user the install process will begin. The in-place upgrade will not ask for:    Certificate name. The one from the previous install will be used.    Database information. This also will be used from the current settings on the Core Server. The database will not be reset but will be upgraded to work with the LDMS 8.5 Core Server. Schema changes needed, will be added during the upgrade process. 21. Reboot the server when prompted. Do Not select the Do you wish to bring over core settings option at the end of the setup. This is not used for upgrades from the 8.x versions. 22. Install APM-5761585.ZIP attached to article 2425 23. To update the APM tables to the 8.5 Schema Run: \Program Files\LANDesk\ManagementSuite\UpgradeInPlace.exe /onlyapm 24. After a Reboot of the server the LDMS 8.5 install will need to be activated with a username and password from LANDesk. With an Upgrade the Username and Password should be the same as used in the previous version.   Side by Side Upgrade   If a side by side upgrade is needed to be performed to so that hardware or Operating system of the Core Server can be upgraded at the same time then the supported method for this is one of two methods: 1. On the New System install the current version of LANDesk using the existing database. 2. Then upgrade the New System to LDMS 8.5 Or. 1. Install LDMS 8.5 on the new system using a new database or MSDE 2. Upgrade the old Core Server and existing database to LDMS 8.5 3. Shut down the existing Core Server that will be replaced. 4. On the New Core Server change the database being used, from the one used on the install to the database used by the old Core Server.  A side by side migration from 8.x to 8.5 is not supported by LANDesk and will not work the upgrade process is not launched and the database does not go through the upgraded process. Executing CORDBUTIL.EXE and selecting build components does not do the same thing as if the database has been through the upgrade process.   10 Untitled Document  If a side by side upgrade has already been performed not using the above steps, prior to reading this guide and a backup or image can not be restored, the following steps can be followed to get the existing database to a point that it can be used with LDMS 8.5. This is not a workaround to a side by side migration the Software Licensing and Application Policy data will be lost in using this method:   1. Stop all of the LANDesk and Intel Services 2. Install patch APM-5761585.ZIP attached to article 2493 3. Run \Program Files\LANDesk\ManagementSuite\UpgradeInPlace.exe /PRE 4. Run \Program Files\LANDesk\ManagementSuite\coredbutil.exe 5. Click Build Components 6. Click Publish App List 7. Update Reports 8. Update Display Names 9. Click Close 10. Run \Program Files\LANDesk\ManagementSuite\UpgradeInPlace.exe /onlyapm 11. Run \Program Files\LANDesk\ManagementSuite\vaminer /upgrade 12. Run \Program Files\LANDesk\ManagementSuite\UpgradeInPlace.exe      11
