Having originally used the Superdome for corporate data warehousing, Banco Espírito Santo then added a credit scoring environment with Fair Isaac’s Blaze application running more than 30 credit scoring models, providing notes to the branch network in real-time.

It has successfully migrated to a new credit scoring infrastructure that uses Superdome with IBM WebSphere MQ v6.0, which now supports HP-UX 11iV2 and achieves similar levels of functionality to those previously available on HP-UX 11i1 PA-RISC systems. WebSphere enables users to integrate their applications reliably and consistently, allowing them to leverage their existing software and hardware assets more effectively.

The problems we were previously facing have now gone away. We arenow able to generate large reports much more quickly and efficiently. Artur Guterres, head of information management, Banco Esp rito SantoHHPP ccuussttoommeerr ccaassee ssttuuddyy:: Banco Esp rito Santo upgrades to Itanium for greater scalability in linewith business needs.IInndduussttrryy::  Financial ServicesOne of the oldest banks in Portugal, Banco Esp ritoSanto (BES) is now the third largest financialinstitution in the country with 1.6 million customers,600 branches, 7,000 employees and a most recentturnover of a280m. This general purpose bank has many activitiesincluding retail and investment banking, assetmanagement, leasing, sales finance, brokerage, insurance, factoring and venture capital. It also has a vision to become one of the mostefficient banks in Iberia and that means maintainingcomprehensive and readily available customer dataand business intelligence. To run these crucialfunctions, BES chose an HP Superdome but withintense growth in the demand for large and morenumerous reports, the four-year-old machine wasbecoming overworked and unstable.Having originally used the Superdome for corporatedata warehousing, BES then added a credit scoringenvironment with Fair Isaac s Blaze applicationrunning more than 30 credit scoring models, providing notes to the branch network in real-time. It has successfully migrated to a new credit scoringinfrastructure that uses Superdome with IBMWebSphere MQ v6.0, which now supports HP-UX11iV2 and achieves similar levels of functionality tothose previously available on HP-UX 11i1 PA-RISCsystems. WebSphere enables users to integrate theirapplications reliably and consistently, allowing themto leverage their existing software and hardwareassets more effectively. At BES, this message-oriented middleware, used withIntegrity, has brought a whole new environment forcredit scoring by enabling the bank to getinformation direct from the mainframe and datawarehouse then build it into vital credit ratings. ItOObbjjeeccttiivvee:: Banco Esp rito Santo (BES), one of Portugal s topthree banks, found that its four year-old HPSuperdome could not keep pace with theincreased size and number of business critical, financial reports being requested by 3,000 users.AApppprrooaacchh::" BES decided to upgrade the HP Superdome from32-bit PA-RISC to 64-bit Integrity." It migrated its MicroStrategy business intelligenceplatform from the traditional Windowsenvironment to HP-UX on 64-bit. " To streamline its credit scoring environment it hasalso successfully migrated to a new infrastructurethat uses Superdome with IBM WebSphere MQv6.0.IITT iimmpprroovveemmeennttss:: " Upgrading was a more cost-effective solutionthan replacement and the ongoing ability toscale makes it a high value solution." Performance and scalability of the HPSuperdome were important factors." The bank needed to have confidence in thestability and reliability of this crucial system andbelieved that HP Superdome would provide this.BBuussiinneessss bbeenneeffiittss:: " This upgrade was the most efficient way to alignthe bank s IT with its business needs, providing itwith the agility to meet the challenges of itsmarket." Bank staff now have all the reports they need tosupport their daily decision making and thebank has confidence in the HP Superdome sreliability and scalability.Banco Esp rito Santo finds a powerful newway to generate effective business intelligenceUntitled Documentincreases the speed of report generation andsupports Basel II compliance. After intensive WebSphere MQ tests on HP-UX 11iV2 during the IBM Software Beta program, we aresuccessfully running WebSphere MQ V6 on our newItanium2 based HP Integrity Superdome Server, saidLuis Madruga, technical consultant (infrastructure anddistributed systems) at BES. The latest WebSphereMQ V6 release on HP Integrity Server increasedsystem resiliency and business flexibility which helpsour bank to simplify and optimise our transactionprocessing infrastructure 24 hours a day. BES also provides crucial business intelligencereports to its branches using the Web and ReportService elements of the MicroStrategy platform. UUnnddeerr pprreessssuurree We had been experiencing 90 per cent constantusage of CPU which is very dangerous, said ArturGuterres, head of information management at BES. We were getting throughput problems in producingreports because of the times the batches were takingto prepare. We could also foresee further increasesin usage to enable the bank to comply with therequirements of Basel II and because we were takingon more companies in our group. When these memory and performance issues startedto affect the daily efficiency of the business criticalfinancial data reporting to its 3,000 users, a solutionhad to be found and it was decided to increasecapacity, speed and scalability by upgrading the HPSuperdome from PA-RISC to Itanium2 on IntegritySuperdome, and by migrating MicroStrategy from itstraditional Windows environment to HP-UX on 64-bit. Business intelligence, data warehousing and creditscoring information is practically mission critical tothe operation of the bank and its branches, addedGuterres. The branches are used to getting instantand relevant information regarding objectives andcommercial rankings. This makes them morecompetitive so if the system does not get actualisedone day, we have big problems.SSccaallaabbllee aanndd ffaasstt As well as the operational credit scoring, by the endof the year, the data warehouse will hold all of theinformation for all of the companies within the BESgroup in one consolidated version. It will have theprofitability model, an ABC cost model, run-offmodels in terms of risk. We have a couple of toolsfor managing daily commercial activity including costcontrol, budgeting control and management, andincentive systems for all the commercial areas.Basically, a single point of information for the wholecompany is provided from this data warehouse onthe Superdome. We also decided to change MicroStrategy fromWindows to HP-UX because Windows 32-bit hadscalability limits in terms of capacity. We neededmuch more capacity for MicroStrategy because ourusers were being very demanding in terms of reports. They execute 4,000 reports a day through self-service and we had to move to 64-bit to achieve thescalability needed to produce many more and muchmore powerful reports. BES was also upgrading from MicroStrategy BusinessIntelligence Platform7 to version 8. The problems we were previously facing have nowgone away, added Guterres. We are able togenerate large reports much more quickly andefficiently because the sizing of the system is a bettermatch for the requirements of the bank. We have setup a system that gives users the power of self-service,requesting reports over our internal WAN, directfrom the Superdome. The HP Superdome is a very stable system whichprovides us with the confidence and reliability weneed in a bank. To learn more, visit www.hp.com 2006 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.
