There is no question that in large enterpises today, email is the backbone for transporting a wide array of information from non-public customer and patient information, to executive communications, to mission critical intellectual property and more. In recognition of this reality, a growing number of industry and governmental regulations have been enacted to explicitly or implicitly require organizations to better manage, secure, monitor, and archive their email messages. Several regulations, such as Sarbanes-Oxley apply to public companies in all industries. Other regulations, such as HIPAA and NASD 3010, apply to specific industries, such as a healthcare and broker-dealer interactions.
