Eee – That's Clever
January 30, 2008
Posted by: Glyn Moody
Everyone's heard of the Asus Eee PC by now – the amazing ultra mobile computer costing just £200. Of course, that price is only possible because it runs free software – so no Microsoft tax to pay. But the advantages of using open source go much further, because they let manufacturers try out all kinds of wacky ideas, which is precisely what Asus has done with the E-TV:
The E-TV is a 42in LCD TV, but it will have computer technology on board running Linux to allow users to surf the internet and read email. Asus said it will retail for no more than $200 above what you'd pay for this kind of telly.
Once the software costs nothing, you can add it to anything. Gnu/Linux toasters, anyone?
