The Inspiron 6400n and the Inspiron 530n are now in the UK, Germany and France, as Dell’s initial response to calls from Linux enthusiasts for the open source operating system to be pre-installed.

The announcement follows customer feedback from 30,000 users on Dell’s www.ideastorm.com, web site.

“Dell is continuing to deliver on our commitment to give customers what they’re asking for – the option of choosing Linux as their operating system,” said Charlie Tebbs, Marketing Director, Consumer, Dell EMEA. “As we hear from customers throughout Europe and around the world, we will continue to explore the opportunities to expand our offerings globally, so stay tuned.”

Ubuntu is a Linux-based open source operating system that is community developed and updated regularly. Designed to be user friendly, Ubuntu comes with built-in software for a high level of office productivity, including word processor, spreadsheets and presentation applications, as well as e-mail, calendar, chat, web browsing and photo capabilities.

With no software licensing costs associated with Ubuntu, Dell is pricing the Inspiron 6400n at £329 including VAT and delivery for a fully configured machine and £399 including VAT and delivery for the Inspiron 530n.

Dell has created the Dell Linux Forum on on Dellcommunity.com, to help end users, while additional service upgrades are available from Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, including: 30-day Get Started, One-year Basic and One-Year Standard.

so what's the saving? how much is it for exactly the same PC but with Windows pre-loaded? until they put it down in black and white not many people are gonna bite the bullet

brandon said on Tuesday, 07 August 2007

well, we shall see in the long run...
historically, pc hardware vendors usually treat linux as a poise to haggle oem license fee with MS, include the dell. nobody treat linux seriously.
let's count how long this drama takes before dell abandon it.

This is bull****, why announce something that isn't available? Dell need to get it together and CWUK should do some f***ing research before posting this sh*t.

Looking at these products, it is impossible to do a direct price comparison with Vista, because they don't share a graphics option, but with the most basic graphics options on both and everything else exactly the same the prices are:

Ubuntu: £416.61
Windows Home Basic: £362.49

The Windows PC is £50 cheaper for an OS that retails for £150 (amazon). Even if the Ubuntu PCs graphics are worth £50 more than the Windows PC's (maybe?) the Ubuntu PC is no cheaper.
