Virgin Mobile boosts support for key open source database

Opts for round-the-clock cover for text-message data stored in MySQL

By Computerworld UK reporter

Virgin Mobile said today it has upgraded to use a top-level enterprise support package for the open source MySQL database it has developed to track and manage the flow of SMS texts by its registered users.

It has begun using MySQL’s platinum enterprise support to give it access to enterprise class software, monitoring tools and production support. With the service, the response of a MySQL support expert is guaranteed within less than 30 minutes 24 hours a day.

The mobile operator said tracking usage of its SMS service generated “considerable storage and processing requirements” and required a “highly available” database management system, which it had developed internally using MySQL, but the need round-the-clock support had then arisen.

Virgin Mobile has developed a range of open source applications to interrogate its data, based on a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Perl/Python) platform.

It said its internal development programme based on open source ensured “a significant return on investment compared with a proprietary system.”

“This service is at the heart of all SMS/mobile applications – but also operates the CRM applications, the billing and the management of Virgin Mobile orders”, it added.
