Why: In 2010, Dell announced a managed security services partnership with SecureWorks intended to lure customers of Dell security tools into service agreements. The purchase brings the service business in-house.

Why: Avaya wants to beef up its audio and video conferencing capabilities with Konftel's OmniSound audio technology designed for collaboration environments and integrate it with Avaya's overall unified communications architecture, Avaya Flare Experience.

Why: To pursue cloud-based anti-malware protection, entering an arena that puts Sourcefire in direct competition with traditional anti-malware providers.

Why: Akorri's products will be used to extend the functionality in storage company NetApp's OnCommand management software portfolio. Akorri's BalancePoint platform allows IT administrators to troubleshoot, optimize, plan and manage service levels across both physical and virtual environments.

Why: By acquiring Atheros, Qualcomm is hoping to help expand the use of the smaller company's wireless chip technologies beyond cellular networks.

Why: Black Duck, which offers open source network management tools, adds consulting services for companies looking to increase their use of open source software.

Why: The Qik mobile-to-mobile video streaming service will help enable Skype to expand its voice and video calling service beyond PCs and to more devices.

Why: Expand Verizon's cloud service offerings - Terremark offers collocation, managed infrastructure and cloud computing services from 13 data centers in the US, Europe and Latin America.

Why: CA plans to use Torokina's expertise and tools to expand its support of service providers, especially those offering 3G, 4G and Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile technologies

Why: Will enable Google to expand its voice technology offerings via SayNow's social voice applications.
