He added a stunning $20.5 billion to his fortune last year, having merged his fixed line telecom company Telmex into America Movil, the largest wireless carrier in Latin America.

Brazilian industrial magnate Eike Batista is eighth with $30 billion.

Forbes recently released its list of the world's billionaires, and those who made their fortunes in the technology and telecom industries had a fair showing.

The list is up to a record 1,210 billionaires, and 89 came from the technology industry, including Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page (tied at No. 24), Amazon's Jeff Bezos (No. 30), Dell's Michael Dell (No. 44), Microsoft's Steve Ballmer (No. 46) and Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg (No. 52).
