The public sector could cut the size of its ICT bill by a significant 32 percent if it introduced more effective flexible working policies, according to Citrix, which has obtained new data under a freedom of information request, revealing the cost of the government estate to the taxpayer.
Citrix found that the government estate cost taxpayers an average £490.40 per square metre during 2010 and 2011, with an average outlay of £47.9 million per department. The figures also outline that on average 1.1 desks are allocated per employee across the public sector.
Some departments, including the Office for Standards in Education, have 1.6 desks to every office worker.
Citrix has said that if the government were to introduce better flexible working policies it could cut its ICT bill by 32 percent and reduce the average desk per person ratio down to 0.4.
“By embracing the benefits offered by modern technology and more flexible working practices, the government could effectively halve the number of desks it maintains across departments,” said James Stevenson, area vice president of Citrix Northern Europe.
“This not only means cost savings which can be passed onto taxpayers, but also presents a fantastic opportunity to transform the way government works, making it more agile and efficient while at the same time improving frontline service delivery.”
