Egypt orders Vodafone and others operators to close mobile networks

Protests grow against regime

Vodafone Group has shut down mobile phone service in Egypt after being ordered to do so by the government, which is under siege by protesters.

A Vodafone statement reads:

All mobile operators in Egypt have been instructed to suspend services in selected areas. Under Egyptian legislation the authorities have the right to issue such an order and we are obliged to comply with it. The Egyptian authorities will be clarifying the situation in due course."

Word of the mobile services shutoff follows Egypt's pulling the plug on Internet connections and Twitter already this week.

Egypt is experiencing its worst civil unrest in more than 30 years, as citizens have taken to the streets demanding an end to the government of President Hosni Mubarak.

Vodafone operates in Europe, Africa and Asia, and has an investment in Verizon Wireless in the US.
