UK consumers made 51 million contactless payments in last 12 months

Monthly contactless spend has also increased five-fold to £45.2 million in June 2013

Contactless payments appear to be growing in popularity with UK consumers, after Visa revealed that more than 51 million purchases were made in the last 12 months using the NFC-enabled technology.

The global payments company also said that monthly contactless spend had increased five-fold to £45.2 million in June 2013 when compared to the same period last year.

Some £338 million has been spent on contactless Visa cards since June 2012, with an average purchase value of £6.65.

Visa has unveiled a string of deals with retailers in recent months, with the likes of Starbucks and Marks & Spencer opting to roll-out the technology in-store. However, there have been complaints from consumers about duplicate payments being made accidentally in stores and concerns that the banks aren't making it easy to opt-out of receiving cards with the NFC technology enabled.

“A year ago we launched the Contactless 2012 campaign to raise public awareness of contactless technology and the convenience and flexibility it brings to day to day payments,” said Mark Austin, head of contactless at Visa Europe.

“We are delighted to see the technology now being used so frequently on the high street as consumers become confident in making every day contactless payments and we’re excited about the number of new shops due to roll out contactless payment in the remainder of 2013.”

Visa also said that more than 3 million Visa contactless journeys have been made on London buses since Transport for London introduced the payments system in December 2012.

There are currently more than 28 million Visa contactless cards and 280,000 contactless terminals in the UK.
