Vodafone in network outage following datacentre break-in

BIg questions to answer over business continuity procedures

Thieves broke into a Vodafone datacentre in Basingstoke last night, stealing network equipment and bringing about an outage for many of the company’s customers across the UK.

Customers have lost voice, text and internet access on their mobile phones, according to the company. Vodafone has not confirmed how many people are affected by the outage.

A moderator on Vodafone’s customer forum online, called ‘James’, said a “network server issue” was affecting the service – but this has not been officially confirmed. The moderator said work to fix the technology was taking place as a “high priority”.

Vodafone, which insisted its customers’ information was secure, said in a statement: “We had a break in last night at one of our technical facilities which resulted in damage done to some of our equipment. This means that some customers may be experiencing temporary loss of voice, SMS and internet services.”

The company's statement will raise concern among its enterprise users that the network operator does not have sufficient failover capacity and that its backup and disaster recovery procedures are not sufficiently robust.
