Pinewood Studios says it has installed a more cost effective, flexible and reliable infrastructure.

The provider of film and TV making space has deployed an architecture consisting of VMware on HP servers, EMC VNX SAN storage, Citrix XenDesktop virtualisation, and Veeam back up and replication.

The infrastructure was designed and deployed by IT services firm Codestone, which is also supporting the system.

Pinewood said the new set-up would support the needs of film makers for the "next five years".

Darren Woolfson, director of technology at Pinewood Studios, said, “We now have a robust infrastructure based on leading technologies which offers us the ability to flex our infrastructure as and when we need."

He said, "This new infrastructure has been designed to incorporate a high availability and disaster recovery strategy.”

Woolfson said Pinewood had achieved cost savings through the virtualised strategy, from buying lower volumes of expensive hardware through to operational maintenance, including space and cooling.”

The virtual infrastructure is supported by offsite disaster recovery replication.

Citrix XenDesktop has been used across desktops, extending their functional life from three to over five years, said Pinewood, as well as centralising all application management and updates.
