Mobility is the most important digital technology priority for large enterprises, according to a global study by consulting firm Accenture, published ahead of this week's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Mobility is the most important digital technology priority for large enterprises, according to a global study by consulting firm Accenture, published ahead of this week's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The Accenture research shows 43 percent of companies rank mobility as a top one or two priority, with 77 percent placing it in the top five.

Big data analytics came next in the top five with 72 percent, followed by connected products (smart interconnected devices that collect, send and receive useful data) at 65 percent.

For its research Accenture surveyed almost 1,500 C-level executives at companies in 14 countries around world, for its "Accenture Mobility Insights Report 2014".

Over a third of enterprises (35 percent) expect the convergence of social, mobile, analytics, cloud and connected products to increase their sales in existing markets.

Three quarters view the adoption of digital technologies as a strategic investment rather than something to be evaluated on a case by case basis, as 29 percent expect their adoption to generate additional revenue, 28 percent plan to build entirely new digital businesses or services as a result of convergence, and 27 percent expect to penetrate new markets altogether.

“Any successful technology implementation requires certain ingredients, but this research demonstrates that in the case of newer, digital technologies it’s not just about actions, but about attitude too,” said Jin Lee, global managing director of Accenture Mobility.

“Mobility was the forerunner to many of the digital technologies that are now being adopted, and businesses can learn from mobility leaders’ successes as to what they need to do to make their adoption of analytics, social or connected products successful."

Despite the enthusiasm for mobile technology, the study found that only 30 percent of respondents believed they had the right talent and skills to properly plan and execute their mobility initiatives.

This goes some way in explaining why only 27 percent feel they keep pace with new mobile devices, systems and services.
