British Gas will use CGI’s Adapter solution to manage its customers’ smart meters via the Data and Communications Company (DCC).

DCC provides the shared infrastructure underpinning the £11 billion mass smart meter rollout in Britain.

CGI's Adapter solution simplifies the process of connecting to the DCC under national roll-out plans.

Adapter meets the terms of connection set out in the Smart Energy Code, and minimises the level of IT development changes needed to an energy company’s own internal systems, making it easier and more efficient to be smart meter ready.

British Gas says it has already deployed more than one million smart meters to its domestic customers across Britain. Over half of these are supported by CGI through its Smart Data Services programme.

CGI recently announced an agreement with Telefonica, which sees the operator join its Smart Meter Data Services programme too.

In September, Public Accounts Committee (PAC) MPs warned that some of the technology being implemented for the national smart meter rollout could be outdated by the time it is in place.
