Tesco picks Capgemini to boost green drive

Managed data service will help supermarket giant hit carbon neutral target

Tesco has signed up Capgemini to provide a global managed service responsible for the collection, processing and reporting of energy and carbon emissions data.

The contract will provide the data the supermarket giant needs to meet its target of becoming carbon neutral by 2050.

The retailer, which has 500,000 employees, will use Capgemini’s ecoGovernance model to provide a specialist managed service for energy and carbon data management to support its in-house sustainability team.

Under the contract, Capgemini will collect, process and report on energy use and carbon emissions from Tesco operations worldwide, with Tesco retaining overall control of the process.

Ben Day, Climate Change Manager of Tesco, said “Capgemini was able to provide us with a proven, ready-to-run solution. We were attracted by its ability to provide the required support, its understanding of energy and carbon data management issues and its specialist skills with the CA Technologies ecoGovernance sustainability tool set.

“We expect to see an immediate improvement in the efficiency and capacity of our carbon footprint measurement and reporting process.”

The outsourcing contract will allow Tesco's in-house sustainability teams to focus on strategic issues, the company said.

Tesco last week reported a boom in online sales as a bright spot in otherwise disappointing sales.
