ITV unifies its multiple platforms with APIs

APIs are a "key tool" to make ITV agile

ITV is using and API platform provided by Apigee to integrate legacy IT systems and allow the TV network to share data with developers and business partners.

Using APIs, code that grants access to each application in a system, will allow ITV to make its back end services available online for customer-facing applications and platforms without exposing back end systems.

ITV, the largest commercial television network in the UK, has deployed Apigee’s Edge, an API platform that functions as a middle layer between the back end and the customer-facing platforms. Built on Java, the platform allows developers to access a public, and consistent API proxy.

This means that ITV can modify its core systems, for example, change a database, without affecting its 19 different platforms across mobile, desktop and television through, ITV Player and through partners Netflix and iTunes.

Paul Clark, ITV online CTO, said: “APIs are one of the key tools we’re using to ensure ITV is an agile, responsive digital business. Through APIs we can integrate and leverage our IT systems and securely expose our applications and data to internal and external developers and partners.

“We selected Apigee because its technology, team and track record were second to none, and its platform is ideally suited to helping us fulfill our digital vision.”

ITV recently moved from physical tapes to digital files at a fraction of the cost quoted by consultants thanks to agile methods, according to ITV Online CTO Paul Clark. It took four months and £2 million to build a ‘good enough’ working solution, Clark told attendees at Ignite summit.
