HP has launched a new set of consultancy services that aims to help organisations develop and implement sustainability strategies that are aligned with business goals.

The HP Energy and Sustainability Management (ESM) service is a modular offering comprising stages to take an organisation from developing a roadmap to implementing it across the whole business. HP’s partners include environmental and energy management software company Hara.

As part of the service, HP has launched a ‘discovery workshop’, which is aimed at bringing together senior management from all the different areas of the business, including IT, supply chain, finance and the CEO.

“Your sustainability goals have to be in line with the business goals,” said Ian Brooks, European head of innovation and sustainable computing at HP.

“ESM is a series of services that allow you to understand where you are today in terms of energy efficiency, giving you a baseline of where you are today. Then we can brainstorm and produce a roadmap to take organisations where they want to end up.”

HP has used the service internally, testing it out on a specific part of the company’s supply chain. It said it has also used the service to eliminate more than 20,000 journeys as a result of using online collaboration tools.

Meanwhile, Avaya is one of the first major customers who is willing to reveal how it is using HP’s offering to understand and mitigate its carbon footprint.

At the launch of the ESM services, Wilson Korol, sustainability business leader at Avaya, said that his company has used the service to establish a baseline for its carbon footprint, which was 120,000 metric tonnes in 2009. Around 85 percent of this was electricity consumption.

“At the end of 2010 we were looking at expanding our approach to carbon management and we settled on the HP and SaaS solution from HARA.”

“I’ve been able to identify hotspots in our global real estate portfolio, and we want to make a carbon reduction of 15 percent by 2015 on the 2009 figure,” said Korol.

Korol said that the reporting capabilities offered by HP are also beneficial, as reports are automated and therefore faster to produce.

The cost of the ESM service starts from around €10,000 for the discovery workshop.
