Everything Everywhere, the owner of the Orange and T-Mobile brands, is to launch the first contactless mobile phone payment solution by the summer.

Everything Everywhere, the joint name for Orange and T-Mobile, are to launch the first contactless mobile phone payment solution later this year.

In partnership with Barclaycard, the mobile network operator will make it possible for mobile phone users to use NFC-enabled (Near-Field Communication) handsets to pay for goods and services on the high street. 

Everything Everywhere said it would be working with “the world’s leading handset manufacturers” to equip phones with NFC technology. Today’s announcement follows numerous media reports that new versions of the Apple iPhone and iPad could be NFC-enabled as early as mid-2011.

Gerry McQuade, chief development officer at Everything Everywhere, said: “We’re making something that’s been talked about for many years a reality and, very soon, using your mobile to buy a sandwich, a cinema ticket, or, in time, even something bigger like a computer, will simply be the norm.”

MasterCard PayPass will be the technology used at point of sale to enable the mobile contactless payment transactions, while Barclays will use digital security expert Gemalto’s Trusted Service Management operated services to securely distribute and manage contactless payment services using the Everything Everywhere’s mobile network.

The new technology will be rolled out initially to Orange and Barclaycard customers, who will be able to pay for products by waving their mobile phone against a contactless reader at 42,500 retailers that currently use contactless technology. These include retailers such as Pret a Manger, EAT, Little Chef and supermarket chain Co-Op.
