Barclays chooses smart datacentre cooling
Bank to cut 7,470 tonnes of CO2

Barclays is set to implement a smart cooling datacentre to reduce energy use and carbon emissions.
As part of a package of energy-saving measures, the bank has signed a letter of intent with HP for its Dynamic Smart Cooling technology. The goal is to save up to 13.4 percent of total energy used for this datacentre in Gloucester, UK.

Dynamic Smart Cooling uses an intelligent control node to continuously adjust air conditioning settings based on real-time readings from sensors on IT racks, and just deliver cooling where it is most needed.
Barclays' measures will reduce its carbon footprint by approximately 7,470 tonnes of CO2 per year. As a result, the bank expects to reap savings from its use of HP's technology, as the air conditioners are used more efficiently.
Marcus Agius, chairman of Barclays Group, said: "Efficient energy management is at the heart of our technology infrastructure, and we are investing to use the best technology available."
Agius said Barclays is committed to reducing the carbon impact of its buildings, technology and travel. In 2005, the bank set clear improvement targets, such as reducing CO2 emissions by 20 percent by 2010, and make its operations carbon neutral.
The bank is also member of the CBI Climate Change Task Force, which has been established by the Confederation of British Industry and includes some of the biggest names in British business.
