NHS Tayside trials new workforce management platform

Hopes to make rostering of staff more efficient

NHS Tayside in Scotland is piloting a new workforce management system to support electronic rostering and staff bank management.

NHS Tayside is expecting to see a range of benefits, including less time to produce rosters, fair and transparent rosters for all staff, and better work-life balance as staff are able to access the systems out-of-hours and plan their home lives accordingly.

The SMART system from Kronos involves nine rostering locations and around 300 staff.

The pilot is being rolled out in three stages across a range of clinical and operational areas of the health board, covering surgicalwards, out-patients, elderly peoples’ services, mental health and laundry services.

Ann Mudie, e-rostering pilot lead at NHS Tayside, said: “SMART’s customers in the UK gave us good feedback on the system, particularly regarding SMART’s NHS experience and the flexibility of the support available.

The Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust in London awarded a major three-year framework contract for e-rostering and staff bank software in 2010. Atos Consulting was awarded the contract for the e-rostering system, alongside other suppliers.
