Juniper acquires BlackWave video streaming company

It's been a busy week for Juniper Networks. First, the company unveiled its next generation core router, upping the speeds and feeds ante with Cisco. Then it acquired WLAN pioneer Trapeze Networks from Belden, expanding its addressable market in the enterprise.

Now it's acquiring Internet video and storage technology in an effort to bolster its content delivery networking portfolio. Juniper acquired the intellectual property assets of Blackwave, a maker of Internet video storage and delivery infrastructure. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Juniper plans to integrate Blackwave's technology with its Media Flow Controller, a content delivery and caching system designed to scale and improve the performance of media delivery. Blackwave's technology will improve storage performance and the scalability of Media Flow, Juniper said.

Juniper acquired its way into Media Flow and content delivery with the $100 million purchase of Akeena Networks earlier this year. Juniper's content delivery initiatives compete with Cisco's Medianet strategy to video-enable enterprise and service provider networks.
