EU drops Apple iPhone warranty probe

Apple has agreed to introduce cross-border iPhone warranty repair services

European Union competition regulators have dropped a probe into Apple, after the company agreed to relax restrictions on the iPhone.

Apple has agreed to introduce cross-border iPhone warranty repair services for EU purchasers and relax restrictions on development tools for iPhone applications.

The change in Apple policy should make it easier for iPhone customers to get repairs under warranty in a EU country other than where the smartphone was purchased.

"Apple's response to our preliminary investigations shows that the commission can use the competition rules to achieve swift results on the market with clear benefits for consumers," said EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia at the weekend.

"In light of these policy changes, the commission intends to close the investigations into these matters."
