Oracle and NetApp settle patent dispute

Action centred on ZFS file system

Storage vendor NetApp said Thursday it has reached an agreement with Oracle to settle long running patent litigation.

The action stems from a 2007 suit NetApp filed against Sun Microsystems, which.Oracle acquired earlier this year. Terms were not disclosed.

The litigation centers on Sun's ZFS file system. NetApp's suit had demanded a declaration that it was not in violation of three Sun patents, as well as a ruling that ZFS infringed on seven of its own. Sun later filed a countersuit against NetApp.

Oracle and NetApp "have shared a common vision focused on providing solutions that reduce IT cost and complexity for thousands of customers worldwide," NetApp CEO Tom Georgens said in a statement. The company wants that collaboration to continue, he added.

An Oracle spokeswoman confirmed the contents of NetApp's announcement.
