Amazon says outage was result of hardware failure

It was not a Wikileaks 'hacktivist' attack, company claims

Article comments’s European websites were down for more than half an hour last night, a problem the company blamed on a hardware failure in its European data centre network.

The online retailer’s UK website was also affected by the outage.

Amazon’s explanation was contrary to widespread media reports which claim that Wikileaks ‘hacktivists’, called ‘Anonymous’, were behind website failure. The online retailer was one of the first companies to stop providing cloud services to Wikileaks. It was a planned target for a denial of service attack until hackers reportedly abandoned the plan due to a lack of resources.

“The brief interruption to our European retail sites was due to hardware failure in our European data centre network and not the result of a DDOS [distributed denial of service] attempt,” a spokesperson for Amazon said.

Amazon’s UK, German, French and Spanish websites suffered an outage for more than 30 minutes from about 9.15 pm on 12 December. These sites are hosted in Dublin.

In recent days, denial of service attacks have been launched at other companies that have broken ties with Wikileaks, including credit card companies Visa and MasterCard.

Meanwhile, computer hackers, thought to be affiliated with the Anonymous group, have organised a campaign to upload unpublished Wikileaks cables all over the internet.

Under a plan called Operation Leakspin, the hackers will attempt to access all of the Wikileaks cables, sift through them and publish the most dramatic ones across the web.
