Financial spread betting firm slashes number of data storage systems

Makes it more manageable for IT staff

CMC Markets, the financial spread betting and foreign currency provider, is aiming for improved IT efficiency through consolidating its 32 different data storage arrays into just three.

Hitachi Data Systems is now providing the three new systems that have seen the other multivendor systems ripped out. The new environment enables CMC Markets to "manage its data better, allocate capacity more efficiently, and improve the performance and reliability of its next-generation trading platform", said CMC.

The streamlined data storage system also cuts costs and makes it more manageable for IT personnel. The new configuration includes an Hitachi VSP (virtual storage platform) and a NAS (network attached storage) system to help manage increasing data growth and business critical workloads.

Adam Spencer, group head of IT production at CMC Markets, said: “The technology is helping us to keep our infrastructure and costs manageable.”

In other storage news Amazon Web Services has announced Glacier, a low-cost storage service that has been customised for data archiving and backup.

Areas that are a good fit for Glacier, said AWS, include media archives, financial and healthcare records, raw genomic sequence data, long-term database backups, and information that has to be retained for regulatory compliance.
