Oracle database ‘gurus’ come together at UKOUG event
The three database experts' event has been dubbed ‘Top Gear For Geeks’

Oracle database customers will have an opportunity to learn from three major database experts about how to make the most of their investment at a UK event on 17 May.
The event, brought to London by the UK Oracle User Group (UKOUG), will be an opportunity for user group members to engage with a trio of Oracle database experts, Tom Kyte, Andrew Holdsworth and Graham Wood, at an event that has been dubbed the ‘Top Gear for Geeks’.
Debra Lilley, chairman of the UKOUG, described the speakers as the “go-to gurus for databases”.
As the Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond of the Oracle database world, Kyte, Holdsworth and Wood aim to provide database advice in their own unique way.
“They all specialise in different areas and sometimes disagree with each other,” said Lilley.
The experts will also be addressing questions that have been sent to them directly, those asked by the user group, as well as issues they have seen on forums.
Examples of discussion topics include database connections, SQL statement parsing, performance diagnosis tools such as Automatic Workload Repository (AWR), and database best practices.
The ‘Day of Real World Performance’ event will take place from 9am to 5pm on 17 May at the CBI Conference Centre in London, and costs £114 per person.
But the cost should not put people off, Lilley said. “If you want someone of their calibre to give a class, you would be talking up to £600 a day. If you want them to consult you’d be spending thousands [of pounds].”
