Over three-quarters (76 percent) of UK CIOs are being entrusted to plan and deliver key IT projects without "having their hands held" by company board members, according to research.
Market research firm Vanson Bourne questioned 500 UK CIOs and found that IT teams have "never been more liberated" by senior executives to implement crucial IT programmes.
The research revealed that 40 percent of CIOs are now working most closely with finance teams so they can directly get the funding they need for their projects.
Mobile telecoms CIOs are most independent and require the least input from the board, with just six percent getting direct feedback. They’re closely followed by media companies (seven percent).
Tony Grace, chief operating officer at Virgin Media Business, which commissioned the research, said, “It’s encouraging to see CIOs taking a vital role in companies’ business processes. It’s crucial that IT teams are empowered to support and enable the entire organisation."
While the research indicated CIOs were gaining power, analyst Forrester recently said CIOs should relinquish some, for the good of the business.
Forrester said marketing departments should sell the idea of a marketing technology office (MTO) to CIOs, who would have to relinquish control of certain customer-facing technologies and hand responsibility over to the chief marketing officer (CMO).
