BBC iPlayer gets an upgrade

Version for Mac and Linux also in pipeline

The BBC has overhauled the interface and added more functions to its iPlayer service.

The new beta version of the service, which offers PC users the chance to view TV programmes broadcast on BBC channels in the last seven days, features a larger playback screen as well as a 'last played' section that lets viewers see the most recent programme they watched.

The iPlayer also offers the ability to continue playing content, which has previously been paused, and a recommendation function that lists content related to the programme the viewer is watching as well as links to relevant websites.

Users will also benefit from live radio, the ability to rewind and fast-forward on the 'Listen again' service and a TV schedule detailing which programmes will be available on iPlayer and those that will only be broadcast only on TV.

Erik Huggers, BBC group controller for future media and technology said: "We've learned quite a bit over the last 12 months about what our audience likes… and we've continued to innovate quite substantially."

Huggers also highlighted that a version of iPlayer for Mac and Linux is currently being worked on.

"People underestimate how difficult it is to do this," he added.
