Linklaters retains tailored data search for lawyers

Law firm wants to improve accuracy of results

Linklaters, which employs around 5,000 staff worldwide, is implementing what it calls a "user-orientated" enterprise search platform.

The platform, powered by Autonomy’s IDOL (Intelligent Data Operating Layer) technology is being deployed to enable Linklater's lawyers to work more productively.
Linklaters wanted to tailor its internal search tool to individual lawyers' needs. The firm went to Autonomy partner Okana to deploy IDOL's conceptual search abilities.

The system enables the lawyers to explore the information relevant to them through an easy-to-use search interface.

Gerard Bredenoord, head of knowledge management at Linklaters, said: "Okana’s Sense User Interface, combined with Autonomy’s IDOL enterprise search, provides the lawyers with an interface that allows both implicit and active conceptual searches, that deliver only the most relevant information."

Linklaters is using IDOL to index around 250,000 curated legal knowledge documents, to render a subset of key approved legal knowledge that is searchable by 2,200 lawyers.

Elsewhere Linklaters has virtualised 80 percent of its servers with VMware, and had said it was considering adopting Microsoft's Hyper-V for a project to virtualise servers in small branch offices around the world. The law firm instead stuck with VMware for the branch office project to avoid complications in IT management.
