NHS hands over eight ex-Fujitsu trust contracts to BT

BT and CSC could compete for remaining southern trusts

By Leo King, www.computerworlduk.com

The NHS has signed a deal with BT to provide IT for eight southern NHS trusts, which were previously serviced by Fujitsu, under the £12.7 billion National Programme for IT.

News emerged in January that BT was due to win the contracts, but this is the first official confirmation.

The eight trusts – understood to be Winchester and Eastleigh, Surrey, Sussex, Weston Area, Taunton and Somerset, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Milton Keynes, and Worthing and Southlands – have already installed the Cerner Millennium patient record system, the system BT is installing in London.

It is understood that CSC was not awarded contracts for those trusts because it is instead installing a competitive system, iSoft Lorenzo, to trusts in the north of the country and does not have experience of servicing Millennium. It may, however, be in the running for the thirty-plus other trusts in the south that have not yet installed a system, sources said.

When the proposed deal was leaked in January, the Conservative party accused the NHS of handing over the contracts to BT without a proper tendering process.
