There are a number of names associated with remote access from iOS, but one of the most well-known is LogMeIn. Originally released as a paid app, this is a free remote access tool that can be used to control your Mac or PC from your iPhone or iPad as if you were sat in front of it – the only requirement is an internet or data connection and the necessary client software installed on the computer you intend to access.

Intelligent screen scaling means that it is easy to navigate your computer regardless of whether you are using an iPhone or an iPad, but things are obviously somewhat easier on the larger screen of Apple’s tablet. Remote sessions are password protected and encrypted, so secure is not an issue, but lack of support for Wake-On-LAN (in the free version of the app at least) may present some problems. The concept of remote access means that file editing on the move is easy and you can perform a variety of remote maintenance tasks with ease.

This is almost exactly the same app as LogMeIn Ignition ( but there are a few pro features missing from the free edition. For example, if you want to stream HD movies or take advantage of remote printing with an AirPrint printer, you’ll need to make an in-app upgrade to the pro Ignition version. The paid-for verison also includes support for multiple monitors, and includes a file manager that can be used to transfer file from your iOS device to your computer and vice versa.

There’s no arguing with free. If you have looked at LogMeIn Ignitiion in the past but dismissed it because of the price, there is now no excuse not to at least try out the software. While it is true that there are some limitations, for most people this is simply not going to be an issue. If you would like to be able to access your home computer wherever you may be, install a copy of the app straight away.
