Making the Connection

When the following press release arrived, my heart beat a little faster:
Pentaho Corporation, the commercial open source alternative for business intelligence (BI), today announced that National Health Service (NHS) Islington has deployed Pentaho BI Suite Enterprise Edition for data mining, reporting, and extract, transform, and load (ETL) capabilities. The application, implemented by Pentaho Certified Partner ThotWave Technologies, allows NHS Islington to identify high-risk patients and initiate preventative care, leading to lower hospital admissions, operating costs and healthcare spend.
Could this mean that the doomed NHS Connecting for Health system had finally been junked, to be replaced by the eminently more sensible open source option? I asked, and this is what Pentaho said:
The Pentaho application does not replace the Connecting for Health system or any of its components, which span a number of initiatives around managing patient records, electronic prescription processing, etc. The Pentaho application is focused analysis of patient records using a model developed by NHS to try to predict the likelihood of near-term patient hospitalization.
Ah well, maybe next time. At least open source is starting to get a look in.
