Data scientists are in high demand among UK businesses, valued for their ability to uncover valuable insights from large data sets. And with demand for talent tending to outstrip supply, data science experts are among the highest earning tech professionals. Annual salaries can reach as much £100,000 in some cases.

Within the data scientist role, machine learning has emerged as an area of particular interest recently. The likes of Google may be luring much of the top talent, but more typical enterprise businesses are also on the lookout for machine learning expertise.

Here are some of the most interesting data science and machine learning-related roles currently advertised by UK enterprise firms.

Comparethemarket – Data Scientist

The price comparison site is adding to its team of data engineers and data scientists to speed its transition to “big data technologies and next gen analytics methodologies”. The role involves working closely with product teams to identify new opportunities for the business.

Experience with data analytics tools and a knowledge of advanced statistics – for example multiple regression, GLM’s, Monte Carlo simulation, clustering  and machine learning techniques – are required.

British Gas – Data Scientist

The energy supplier is searching for a new recruit to its Data Science Team, which is focused on solving data challenges with the use of big data tools and machine learning techniques.

The role requires experience with Natural Language Processing, machine learning and genetic algorithms to build intelligent applications and software, as well as managing machine learning systems at scale “including one or more of gradient boosting, neural networks, support vector machines and other artificial intelligence techniques”.

Knowledge of Apache products such as Hadoop and Spark is preferred, as is expertise in statistical packages including R and Python.

Ocado – Robotics Research Software Engineer

The online food delivery and logistics company has been investing heavily in artificial intelligence for some time, in order to further streamline its packing and distribution operations. It is now looking for two new staff members to help design robotics systems.

“The robotics research team is working on pre-production sensor-guided robotic systems using recent research results and state of the art technology to further improve the efficiency of our operation,” the company says in a job posting.

The two roles will also focus on EU research projects that Ocado is involved in. This includes the Ocado-led SecondHands project, which uses machine learning and advanced vision systems to assist technicians.

Expertise is areas such as machine learning (kernel methods, neural nets, HMMs, reinforcement learning) and 2D and 3D computer vision are required.

Barclays – Senior Data Scientist

The ‘Big Four’ bank is hiring a data scientist for its Data, Systems and Insights division, which is focused on using data to provide insights that “drive customer/client loyalty”.

The role will involve leading a “diverse set of disruptive, game-changing initiatives across the bank”, according to the post.

Ideal candidates will have knowledge in areas such as in memory databases and open source technologies such as Hadoop, Pig, Hive, mahout, SQL, Python, Java, R, SAS. Experience of advanced data analytics techniques including machine learning are also preferred.
